Lost finale will be simulcast overseas
British Yahoo website is reporting that Lost finale next week will be simulcast in multiple countries “to curb illegal downloading”. See full article here. Other countries are also listed in the simulcast – Canada, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Israel and Turkey. Side note to all geography fans, Canada is a little tiny country just north of the big US of A, you hardly notice it on the map. Canada just happens to share the same time zones as States, so a simulcast is actually a pretty regular thing around here. And the reception in our igloos is pretty good.
Anyway, the geography lesson aside, can we just give it a rest with Lost and its inhabitants? And also lay off the “rampant piracy” concerns. The show has lost its original glitter, people have gotten tired of the last season and a half of bullshit, and this dumb marketing ploy is just an excuse to play fuzzy numbers and statistics. The finale is followed by a DVD release about 48 hours later, so that a whole bunch of overpaid lazy writers and producers can say “watched by XX millions, purchased by XX thousands”. That’s it. Just like charging extra at the theater for cheezy 3D effects, and concluding that a film is a blockbuster (while it’s the actual ticket price that was inflated), this “Lost” finale is going to be ballooned into an event that never will be achieved again.
Maybe if the writers bothered to put together a solid arch, and bring in engaging characters in the last season, I would stick around, and count down the minutes until the finale. Unfortunately, these days I much prefer to watch paint dry. Lost has become a big disappointment (read my earlier post about JJ Abrams not finishing any of his projects properly), and I just want this fad, inflated and horribly mutated fad, to end.
Enough already. Fade to black. No doubt millions will watch in USA/Canada. Three more families in Turkey, and maybe another American on vacation at his villa in Spain. We don’t care. Not anymore. Stop tricking us into watching this crap. Cash in on the DVDs, and move on. You have ruined another great show by stretching it one season too long, and doing it with fantastic abandon and recklessness. “Let’s move the island” indeed.
