I’m With Her – Tuesdays on ABC

The show is a sitcom adaptation of a chick-flick Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant made famous with Notting Hill.

The scenario is very similar. A boy, Patrick (David Sutcliffe), meets girl, Alex (Teri Polo). Alex is an actress. Paparazzi follow Alex and Patrick. Boy has to deal with his privacy being taken away, and his insecurities as a dominant male.

I am not saying that I didn’t like the show—it’s… cute. Very cute. It was designed for the same demographic that likes chick-flicks. I happened to be a girl, my boyfriend however walked out of the room to play one of his computer games.

With that said there were very funny characters aside from Roberts and Grant in Notting Hill that made the movie watchable. These guys are missing in this show. The pestering paparazzi, Alex’ rude sister, and Patrick’s quirky best friend are not enough. The kids in Patrick’s class were kinda cute, but really annoying at the same time. Sort of like the Olsen twins.

The show ended, and I thought, OK what’s next? They pretty much covered all the interesting aspects of having a star for a girlfriend. What will happen with the rest season? More stupid remarks by Patrick’s best friend? More jokes with cute and insightful kids? More paparazzi following them around?

It was a… cute idea. But I don’t know for how long you can stretch it. If the creators of the show make Alex more down to earth—the show will automatically become a more formulaic romantic comedy like Mad About You. But in Mad About You none of the characters were actors, and the writing was really good. I wasn’t too impressed with the writing for I’m With Her to begin with.

In the end all that cuteness made me wanna gag. Then again cute things do seem to last for a while in TV land—look at Full House.
