Box Office Previews Friday, June 24, 2005 - Herbie vs. Land of the Dead vs. Bewitched

I'm not going to put up the visuals for any of these three box-office contenders. In fact, I'm regretting even mentioning them. OK, I'm not being entirely honest - I wouldn't mind seeing Will Farrell on the big screen, and Romero's films never lose their style. But it's all "been there, done that" anyway, and since the rant is going to be exactly about that, let's not over-advertise any of these "instant-classics". 17-week-long slump, you say, I think it's about to become 18-week-long. read more...

Box Office Previews May 27 - The Longest Yard vs. Madagascar

longest yardmadagascarWe're going to resume doing these weekend previews - just because Hollywood refuses to grow up. Let's see, this weekend we have a battle between an Adam Sandler remake, and a Dreamworks animation cash-in. Who will prevail - a loud, angry, in-your-face sports romp The Longest Yard, or cutesy, colourful, mindless animal adventure Madagascar. Well, if you want sports done right, check out Kicking and Screaming, or the original Longest Yard with Burn Reynolds; for animated animals, go to your video store and rent Antz, A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo, or even Ice Age. The better alternatives are there, so save your time and money on counless copies and weak imitations. Despite how much these two will rake in. read more...

Box Office Previews November 5th - The Incredibles vs. Alfie

incrediblesalfieBoy, I'm behind with box-office predictions. Still, plugging away on the reviews and movie clips, I must catch up with current films at the multiplexes. So, a week after Halloween, the Oscar race begins. Gone are the September turkeys (I mean movies), and the October horror flicks (although there's nothing wrong with a good scare here and there), and we're finally entering the fun phase of movie business - critically acclaimed, but poorly performing "vehicles". read more...

Box Office Previews August 20 - Exorcist: The Beginning vs. Without a Paddle

exorcistwithout paddleAfter last year's success of "Freddy vs. Jason" the trend of August horror mania continues with "Exorcist: The Beginning" (it's a prequel, dummy), and "Without a Paddle", a send-up of "Deliverance". I would have shelled out to see Stellan Skarsgard battle demons, and Seth Green get lost in the woods, except "The Exorcist" had to be re-shot to make it "more gory", at the request of the studio, and Seth has been promoting his movie for about five weeks. Now if it takes five weeks to sell a movie, it won't survive that long in the theaters, so sit this one out, kids. Instead, go rent the original "Exorcist", or "Poltergeist", and as for camping comedy intended to be spooky - I really liked "Cabin Fever", even though it was sold as a horror flick. read more...

Box Office Previews August 13 - Alien vs. Predator vs. Princess Diaries 2

AVPprincess 2So it's come to this. The dog days of August are reduced to a sci-fi gorefest (Alien vs. Predator), based on a computer game, of all things, and the movie of the month from Disney (Princess Diaries 2). I'd save my money for the original "Alien" or "Predator" (out on DVD now), or last year's smart family comedy "Freaky Friday". Same fish out of water scenario, way better movie. You liked these two? Then post on the forum and let me know why. read more...

Box Office Previews August 6th - Collateral vs. Little Black Book

collateralAs expected, this weekend's opening of Collateral has pushed all other competition (The Village, Bourne Supremacy, The Manchurian Candidate) down the list, and the only other "big" opening was for a lousy chick-flick with Brittany Murphy (Little Black Book), which barely squeezed into the top 5. I'd take Michael Mann's (Ali, The Insider, Heat, Manhunter) film over any action movie any day. read more...

Box Office Previews July 30th - The Village vs. Manchurian Candidate

Opening this weekend: The Manchurian Candidate, The Village, Garden State, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, and She Hate Me. Naturally, the first two are going to battle for the box office throne. My advice would be to go see Garden State, or She Hate Me - small movies, with good ideas, and interesting stories to tell. If you absolutely have to see a big blockbuster this weekend, go with Manchurian Candidate - it may be a remake, but it's a remake of a great, powerful film. read more...
