Movie Reviews Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)

mr mrs smithRecently it has become very difficult to go see a movie without bringing in a pre-fabricated bias. The scandals, the scoops, the marketing campaigns trying to capitalize on the fame of leads are becoming confusing (let alone tiresome). Although I can avoid the gossip pages, or ignore the constant attentions big stars get these days, I could not help being influenced by the Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie romance that came roaring into the media this past spring. Since I wanted to see the movie regardless of their relationship, and went into the theater anyway. I know I was ready to hate the flick, but no matter how hard I tried - I did not succeed. The movie is fun, smart, and is very sexy - almost despite all the mindless marketing that preceded it. Good for the actors, and the creative team - they managed to put together a great film and to hell with gossip rags. Kudos! read more...

Movie Reviews Be Cool (2005)

be coolNot cool, but funny. Not original but sincerely trying to fill big shoes. And very entertaining if you loved the first movie (Get Shorty). I liked all the references, and in-jokes, all the while wondering what would newbies think of them. Without the first movie they lose all meaning, but if you happen to watch the two flicks back to back, the sequel works on many more levels and keeps the "Chili Palmer" universe intact. As a stand-alone - I'm afraid this movie is not cool. read more...

Movie Reviews Belated Cat In The Hat review

I admit I did not see the Grinch. There weren't too many movies in 2000 I bothered to see. But I know it had mixed reviews and those that hated it really hated it. I was hoping to see The Cat In The Hat when it was out. I wanted to when I first saw the trailer in the summer. And then of course with all the advertizing and commercialism (It's so shameless you gotta love it.) I was really tempted to see it. I thought it would be funny and interesting. Interesting, yes. Funny, that's debatable. A good movie, far from it. If I can sum it up in one sentence, I'd say 'blasphemous to Dr. Seuss'. read more...

Movie Reviews War of the Worlds (2005)

Death and destruction everywhere. Steven Spielberg sheds the usual cutesy antics. The typically warm fuzzy feelings we associate with "his" aliens are gone out of the theater with the first strike of lightning. And there's quite a lot of lightning in the movie. What you're witnessing is an invasion. What will follow is a story of a small family, trying to survive, trying to out-run, to stay alive. Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Justin Chatwin, Tim Robbins and Miranda Otto scream and claw their way out of imminent obliteration by aliens. read more...

Movie Reviews Batman Begins (2005)

The franchise that was successfully squandered by a well known director (see Joel Schumacher) gets a well-deserved reboot in this origin story. Dorected by Christopher Nolan (Memento, Insomnia), and written by David S. Goyer (Blade, Dark City), this film is a prequel that sets up all adventures to come. Darker, more violent, even scarier than any of Tim Burton's noble early films, Batman Begins is a return to stylish, sensible comic-book adaptations. No flash, no rubber nipples, no awful one-lines (anyone remembers Mz Freeze?)

Movie Reviews Star Wars 3: Revenge of the Sith

Star Wars 3It's finally over. The saga is complete, George Lucas will hopefully move on to other projects, FOX studios will start looking for a new franchise to milk (while they're squeezing off the last drops from SW movies), and all of us fans will have to deal with this finale, and move on to other sci-fi worlds. Luckily for us, there are plenty of good sci-fi series and movies around. Unfortunately for Lucas, his last project is exceptional only when it's not compared to its peers. read more...

Movie Reviews Finding Neverland (2004)

finding neverlandThis small budget film appeared out of nowhere last fall (along with other small films like Million Dollar Baby, Sideways and Hotel Rwanda), captured the hearts of many, and went on to receive countless nominations and awards for writing, costumes, and performances. Well deserved, I must say, especially since the film doesn't try to force strong emotions from you, it just happens to be powerful and simple at the same time.

Movie Reviews Kung Fu Hustle (2005)

Kung Fu HustleKung Fu Hustle was by far the silliest Kung Fu movie I have ever seen. It was very much the insanity and slapstick humor of the Three Stooges, Buster Keeton, and all the Warner Brothers cartoons mixed in with Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Couching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and every anime, superhero and kung fu movie released recently. It was one overblown cliché after another and yet some how in the end I walked out of the theater smiling. read more...

Movie Reviews Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (2005)

hitchhikerDon't panic. The movie adaptation of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (which in a way is an adaptation of an old BBC radio show) is not as bad as some people on the internet will have you believe. Sure, the naysayers have a point - the source material (a trilogy in five parts) is so big, and full of unbelievable characters and events, it's tough to bring everything to a big screen. So, if you're expecting to see the entire book in a movie theater - you may just stay home and read the book. But if you're in the mood for an odd sci-fi comedy (think Spaceballs, Farscape or Galaxy Quest), you'll enjoy this cute little film.

Movie Reviews Sahara (2005)

saharaIndy might have some serious competition. Not in a direct sense (Indiana Jones franchise is well established and is set in 30s and 40s, way before this movie), but in a "charismatic-hero-who-punches-first-and-asks-questions-later" kinda way. A fast-paced, intelligent adventure movie is difficult to find these days ("The Lord of the Rings" lacked the speed, and "The Rundown" lacked the intelligence), so Sahara is a bit of fresh air in a stale genre.
