Super Bowl Ads
Well, you've asked for it... Actually, nobody asked, but since every other website is running the ads from past games (and the networks really do need that money), here it goes. An easy to use widget from Hulu (yes, the website that's going to kill television in a few months), where you can easily watch all the ads from last year's Big Game. Easy to use if you're living in the United States, that is. It's all about the ads, people, so please watch year-old commercials, and support the poor conglomerates.

PRIMETIME SCHEDULES: What's on TV Christmas
Stores are closed, the winter storm rendered roads undrivable, and the food is probably keeping you paralyzed and comfortably numb. Time to indulge in a marathon or two. Here's what's playing today - pick a channel, any channel. read more...

Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008)
Kevin Smith is growing up; Traci Lords is a notorious porn legend; and Seth Rogen is goofy but not funny. These are all undeniable facts, and you can bash your head against the wall trying to object to this reality, or pretend it's not there. It won't change the fact that Kevin Smith is growing up; Traci ... you get the idea. This movie has many such FACTS going against it - and many would love to see them different, but it's just not possible. For example, I would love to see a movie where Seth Rogen is truly funny - and despite the best marketing campaigns out there - it just doesn't happen - he remains a goof in every film. Yes, there is a difference, and I should know. I would also love to see Kevin write material that's as fresh and sharp as Clerks and Mall Rats - but it's just not going to happen - been there, done that. It belongs to another decade. So let's all move on from the fact that another time, in another place, this could have been a much different movie. Perhaps funnier, perhaps more poignant. It's not going to happen. Let's enjoy it for what it really is. read more...

Fall premiere dates 2008
Oh, where to begin - Deal or no Deal, right after the olympics (had enough plugs for that show); 'Til Death, premiering right before Sept.11 anniversary - two evil events side by side; or maybe Ugly Betty - coming back on September 25 - for those saps who like sappy shows covered in sappiest sap. Sorry, ran out of synonyms. Anyway, the list is huge, the premieres are already here (get your VCRs/DVRs programmed), here are the premieres for this TV season. Enjoy. read more...

RIP - Sydney Pollack
Sydney Pollack has died or cancer. What a terrible loss - the director of Tootsie, The Way We Were, The Firm, Out of Africa, and so many other films - the kind of movies you never watch just once - he's no longer with us. He was also a gifted actor, appearing in many memorable scenes from the last couple of decades - Changing Lanes, Michael Clayton, Eyes Wide Shut, The Player, Husbands and Wives. read more...

Simpsons voice talent on strike again
The people who get astronomical moola to talk in funny voices are at it again. An ongoing contract dispute between the voice talent behind The Simpsons and 20th Century Fox TV has caused production delays on the show's upcoming 20th season and will most likely force the studio to produce fewer episodes this season. read more...

More shows are coming back - don't abandon your teevee yet
Things are still getting back to normal after the writers' strike. In any normal TV season, February would be the month of sweeps, and then we'd all take a couple of weeks off for reruns. By mid-March we'll be watching new episodes again, waiting for the May sweeps. Unfortunately, because of the strike, this schedule is useless. We had over a month of reruns, and many shows didn't come back briefly for February at all. Well, now it seems they're finally coming back. Check out this schedule, and line up your TIVO, or VCR, or whatever you use to keep track of your favourite shows. They're here to stay ... for a few weeks anyway. read more...

Transformers (2007)
Transformers came out on DVD a few weeks ago, and I was reminded that this past summer, this movie fell through the cracks, and the review was never posted. Here's the movie review, a little brief, but better late than never. Given all the marketing and ego-power that went into this project (Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg) this could easily have been a really big disappointed. Instead, Transformers turned out to be a better movie than our depressed expectations, and a good blockbuster to fill a summer weekend. Of course, now that we're nearing the holiday season, and the film is out of theaters, perhaps it will make a good gift. read more...

3:10 to Yuma (2007)
How do you re-invent a tired genre? Quite simple, really: treat the film as if this particular plot was never done before; create three-dimensional characters, put them into realistic situations, and give them just enough screen time to shine without taking away from the story. And finally, if your characters start going through familiar motions (i.e. cliches), treat them with a straight face, giving each of these actions solid motive and reason. Then an old tale will be fresh again. Such is the case with 3:10 to Yuma, a remake of a typical Western movie, which at first glance has nothing new to offer. OK, maybe two things - Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. But only at a first glance. A few minutes into the movie, you know that this is something different, something intelligent, something engaging. read more...

The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
In his review, Roger Ebert mentioned 'seemingly long takes', and talked about how the movie kept the viewer on top of the action, following the chase sequences seamlessly, and easily. In reality, Bourne Ultimatum uses the same visual technique as its predecessor, Bourne Supremacy. For any given sequence, the action is broken down into series of very short takes, that are edited together to create an illusion of uninterrupted action. This is a powerful trick, but it's not for everyone. Some people reacted badly to quick cuts - sometimes by vomiting and losing balance on their seats - but that wouldn't be a good way to advertise a movie, would it? It's soo good it will make you puke. Why did the filmmakers choose this tactic? read more...
