The show was fun, it was light, it was predictable, and it was quirky. Jon Stewart held his ground, looking more comfortable as a host, but the stars weren't entertaining enough. I guess, just like Stephen Colbert said on the first day after the writers' strike -"reading is a muscle, you can get out of shape pretty quickly". For an affair that was put together in about 2 weeks, it was a phenomenal show. For a yearly self-congratulathon packed with celebs, personas and rumours, this was a missed opportunity. Self-censorship, and coy quips are not very amusing. Bring back the pazzazz. Having said that, I think the right films won, and for the right reasons. Here's the list of winners. read more...
Well, the strike is over (we'll post a link to the accomplishments shortly). Looks like the guild is going to vote in it rather quickly, and they're going to accept the (now) preliminary terms. The writers are heading back to their desks pretty much immediately after the vote, and we may just salvage the rest of this miserable season. Since most of the networks are all but empty with new original material, here's the list of what's left of your favourite shows this year. I'd hold breath for more reality programming and fewer original shows in the near future. After all, during the strike weeks, the ratings that dropped were quickly picked up by reruns and reality shows. Plus, if anyone's noticed, the box office was up. So it looks like the studios haven't missed a beat. As for the writers and their pet projects - it remains to be seen what exactly will be developed for next year, in what amounts, and on what budget. Here's a list of stuff yet to air: read more...
Cathy Bates is alive. I haven't seen her in so long, I thought she died or something. anyway, she (and some dude in a formal suit) have just announced the Oscar nominations. Looks like all the right movies have been mentioned - perhaps last year wasn't such a waste after all. Now let's see if there's going to be a ceremony. Diablo Cody, Diablo Cody, Diablo Cody! read more...
Too bad about the non-existent ceremony, or the 'news-conference' as NBC called it. The awards were embarrassingly lame, self-absorbed, and prophetic - that's the glimpse of things to come. In a year or two this will be news, this will be the headlines. In any case, if you remove the presentation, the winners are actually pretty good. Mad Men, Julie Christie, Johnny Depp, David Duchovny, No Country for Old Men - all good films and actors. Check them out - worth every minute. Here's the full list of winners (bold-red). read more...
Can you believe it's been so long? 30 years ago Shatner was the coolest cat around. He can still show us a glimpse of that brilliance on Boston Legal. Enjoy this little trip back in time.
We all expected this TV season to be all screwy because of the writers' strike. But this is a little too much, even for those who have massive libraries of TV shows to fall back on (yes, it's time for Frasier/Family Guy/Friends marathons for me, and that's only the shows starting with 'F').
Anyway, since the strike is still going on, many shows are running out of their scripted episodes, and have no other choice but end them sooner. Much sooner. Many arcs unfinished, many stories untold. For some shows, this might be a good thing - they can start fresh in the summer, bring in new people, new blood. For newcomers to this year - I think this is a kiss of death. They do not have a full-season commitment, and most likely do not have the budget or interest in continuing at all.
Enjoy these last few episodes - this is going to be one hell of Winter. Too bad about the new shows - they have practically no chance of coming back in the fall. Here's the schedule: read more...
Happy New Year, everyone. The writers' strike might still be on, but there are some good news for TV worms out there: some shows are coming back, and some new ones are being launched - as early as this Tuesday, January 1st. The networks might be bitching about the lack of new programming, and being forced to develop reality shows or import content from overseas, but take a look at this list: Atlantis, Aliens, Lost, Jericho, Terminator, Wire, Medium, and or course, no ABC season will be without 'According to Jim'. Start your DVRs, the new stuff is coming soon. And if you are completely bored, you may get into a few reality shows, too. read more...
The Globes were announced last week, and there are plenty of phenomenal names and movies listed. Unfortunately, we will not be playing the 'guess the winners' game this year - because of the writers' strike. Chances are the ceremony will be boycotted by many stars, and the banter will be minimal. Also, with the toxic atmosphere in Hollywood these days, it's difficult to truly enjoy the accomplishments. Despite that, we encourage all of you to go out and check these films - they are all fantastic, and they deserve your attention. Here are the nominees... read more...
The writers' strike is beginning to affect the current shows. There are the basics - November is normally a sweeps month, so most of the shows have many episodes in the bank, already written and completed. Because December and January are typically slow - holidays and reruns - a few networks complete at least half of the season before the end of November. In other words, these shows can have enough new episodes to last into February. Many new shows still don't have a full-season order, therefore, no new shows scripted or produces, and they are going to run out of new shows pretty soon. Here's the tally so far, across the networks. We fully support the writers, but take a look at this list and beware - your faves are going into reruns pretty quickly. You may not notice it over the holiday season, but come January - you might as well start going to sports arenas and opera houses. read more...
Transformers came out on DVD a few weeks ago, and I was reminded that this past summer, this movie fell through the cracks, and the review was never posted. Here's the movie review, a little brief, but better late than never. Given all the marketing and ego-power that went into this project (Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg) this could easily have been a really big disappointed. Instead, Transformers turned out to be a better movie than our depressed expectations, and a good blockbuster to fill a summer weekend. Of course, now that we're nearing the holiday season, and the film is out of theaters, perhaps it will make a good gift. read more...
